Oct 25th 2008Files lite 1.1

Files lite is our free version of Files and is available now from the App Store.

Connect to Files lite over Wifi from any Mac or PC and drag and drop files straight from the Finder or Windows Explorer, as you would with any other shared folder. In fact any client which understands the WebDAV protocol can connect to Files lite.

Files lite supports viewing of many common file types, including most Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents, PDF documents, images, text, html, movie and audio files. Documents and images are all displayed fullscreen, in portrait or landscape mode. Zoom and pan via the standard pinch and swipe gestures.

Move around documents using the page up/down buttons. These auto-page when the button is held down, making it easy to move around longer documents.

Being free Files lite has a few limitations compared to the full version of Files, the main limitation being a 200MB data storage limit.

Aug 14th 2008Files 1.0.1 Released

Apple have released the Files v1.0.1 update to the App Store today. This is a free upgrade for all users.

UPGRADE WARNING:
Please backup your documents before upgrading. Apple control the application upgrade process and it seems that they do not always perserve existing documents as they should.

Issues fixed in v1.0.1:

  • It is now possible to connect to Files directly from Windows Explorer.
For the latest connection instructions please see here.
  • Excel documents now display correctly in Files 1.0.1.
  • Large image files now display correctly.
  • Local HTML page links now load as expected.
  • Offce 2007 XML documents are viewable in Files 1.0.1. Support for these formats is as good (or bad) as in other iPhone apps, e.g. Mail.
  • Preliminary iWork Support
Although iWork files are not "formally" supported in Files 1.0.1 they are viewable if you zip them up (e.g. readme.pages.zip) before transferring to Files.

Bonjour

Files has always included Bonjour support. However most clients (e.g. Finder, Windows Explorer) don't support WebDAV Bonjour so do not automatically detect Files when it is running on your network.

However, the good news is that from v2.0.1 of the iPhone OS, Apple have enabled broadcast of the iPhone's "local" Bonjour name. This means that on Mac OS X, or on Windows (with Safari or iTunes installed), you can now use your iPhone's name, rather than the IP address, in the WebDAV URL.

For example, if you phone is called "iPhone" in iTunes you can use the following WebDAV URL to connect to Files:

http://iPhone.local:8080

Notes:

  • iPhone OS 2.0.1 is required. This does not currently include the iPod touch which still uses the 2.0 firmware.
  • Windows users must install Safari or iTunes to enable Apple's Bonjour networking support.
